Music and Family!
Learning about how different generations see music has opened my eyes so much. I wasn't able to talk to my family about it all, but luckily my sweet best friends Gigi offered to help me out. Her Gigi is 69 years old, she was born in 1956. It was really cool to hear her side of everything and how her music taste back then differs from now a days. Here's how the interview went:
Me: Hi Mrs. Debbie, How are you doing?
Debbie: I'm doing well, How are you?
Me: I'm doing well! I have some questions about music to ask you.
Debbie: Okay! Let's hear it!
Me: Did you play any musical instruments?
Debbie: No, I did not.
Me: How come you didn't play any?
Debbie: I didn't want to, My mother wanted me to play the flute, but band wasn't my forte.
Me: Were you in choir?
Debbie: I sure was!
Me: Did you have any reasons that you enjoyed choir more than you would've band?
Debbie: I had always enjoyed singing and all of my friends were in choir.
Me: Did you sing in choir all throughout high school?
Debbie: I did!
Me: Did you sing while in college?
Debbie: No I didn't, I still sang on my own time, just not in a choir.
Me: Why's that?
Debbie: I wanted to stay focused on my major, rather then the hobby I enjoyed on the side.
Me: I get that. Have you gone to any concerts?
Debbie: I have been to one.
Me: What was it?
Debbie: Fleetwood Mac!
Me: Oh, that's really cool! Was it a good concert?
Debbie: Yes, I cried the WHOLE time.
Me: What was one of your favorite songs by Fleetwood Mac?
Debbie: My favorite song at the time was "Silver Springs."
Me: Why was that one of your favorite songs?
Debbie: I was young and in love, and I had just got broken up with, and that song really helped me get through that hard time.
Me: Did you have any other music that you would listen to during hard times?
Debbie: Yes, "Dust In the Wind," By Kansas
Me: Oh, I've heard that song. It's beautiful. Did you and your husband have a special song that you two would listen too?
Debbie: Oh yes, It's called "Leather and Lace," by Down Henley and Stevie Nicks.
Me: Why did you two choose that song as your special song?
Debbie: Oh because he reminded me of the leather, and I reminded him of the lace.
Me: Oh how sweet! I have one last question! If I was your daughter or granddaughter, would you support them in there love of arts?
Debbie: Well yes of course! If you have the passion and the drive for music then you should just go for it. No one should stop you from your dream!
Me: I agree! Thank you so much for letting me ask you all of these questions! I had such a great time!
Debbie: Thank you for coming and asking. I'm glad I was able to help!
Hi Kalei! I’m glad to hear that your friend’s Gigi still kept singing in her life despite not studying it in college. I feel like a lot of people I know let music go after high school. I find it really cool how music helped her get through hard times, similar to how we use music today. Even though our generation listens to different artists, music still serves the same purpose. Her comment about her husband being leather and her being lace from the Stevie Nicks and Don Henley song was really sweet!
ReplyDeleteHello!! I really enjoyed reading your blog! I really likes that you interviewed your Friends Gigi and the conversation seemed really relaxed and comfortable! I also enjoyed the song by Fleetwood Mac!

ReplyDeleteI think it's adorable that her song with her husband was leather and lace because he was the leather and she was the lace. Also, I also love Fleetwood Mac too! Gigi's got good taste :)
